Afghanistan:

  • It is a landlocked country situated in Central South Asia. 
  • It is bounded by
    • East and south by Pakistan 
    • To the west by Iran
    • To the north by the Central Asian states of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. Hence, Option 3 is correct.
  •  It also has a short border with Xinjiang, China, at the end of the long, narrow Vakhan (Wakhan Corridor), in the extreme northeast. 
  • Afghanistan can be divided into the central highlands, the northern plains, and the southwestern plateau
  • The country has tall mountains and dry deserts both covering most of its landscape. 
  • The summers are hot and dry whereas the winters are extremely cold, especially in the north of the Hindu Kush mountains. 
  • The Hindu Kush is located on the eastern side of the country close to Pakistan and Tajikistan.  
  • It is so isolated from the waters of the Indian Ocean by the mountains that it has a dry climate most of the year.
  • The main rivers are the Kabul river which meets the Arabian sea by joining the Indus and the Amu Darya originating from the glaciers of the Pamir.
