Guillain-Barre Syndrome

  • Recent Cases: Pune reported nine more suspected cases on January 27, raising the total to 110; Maharashtra also recorded a suspected GBS-related death in Solapur.
  • What is GBS? A rare autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks peripheral nerves.
  • Causes: Often triggered by infections like Campylobacter jejuni, influenza, and Zika virus.

Symptoms:

  • Early Signs: Tingling and weakness, starting in feet and legs.
  • Progression: Weakness may spread to the upper body, affecting movement.
  • Severe Cases: Paralysis, breathing issues, and heart rate abnormalities.

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical Evaluation: Based on symptoms and medical history.
  • Tests: Nerve conduction studies and cerebrospinal fluid analysis.

Treatment:

  • Supportive Care: Managing symptoms and preventing complications.
  • Immunotherapy: IVIG and plasmapheresis help reduce severity.
  • Prevention: Good hygiene, safe food practices, and vaccinations to prevent infections that may trigger GBS.
