European Parliament  represents the second-largest democratic electorate in the world, after the Parliament of India, with an electorate of 969 million eligible voters in 2024.

Since 1979, the Parliament has been directly elected every five years by the citizens of European Union through universal suffrage.

•The voting age is 18 in all EU member states except Malta, Belgium, Austria and Germany, where its 16, and Greece, where its 17.

•The European Parliament, the lower house in the bicameral legislature, has legislative power  in adoption of EU legislation.

•The European  Council is the upper house.

The right to initiate legislative procedure, however, is a prerogative of the European Commission, the executive arm of EU.

•The Parliament’s headquarters are officially in Strasbourg, France; and its administrative offices in Luxembourg City.
