Shifting of Earth’s Magnetic North Pole

  • Recent Update: Scientists have tracked the magnetic north pole’s movement, showing it is now closer to Siberia and continues drifting toward Russia.
  • Magnetic Poles: Generated by Earth’s molten core, they mark points where the magnetic field points vertically downward.
  • Shift of Magnetic North Pole:
    • First identified in 1831 near Canada’s Arctic islands.
    • Has moved over 400 km towards Russia in the past century.
    • Tracked using the World Magnetic Model (WMM), updated every five years.

  • Causes:
    • Core Fluid Dynamics: Turbulent movement of molten iron and nickel.
    • Geomagnetic Anomalies: Instabilities in the magnetic field.
    • Magnetic Reversal Cycle: Possible long-term changes.
  • Implications:
    • Navigation: Frequent updates needed for accuracy.
    • Animal Migration: Disruptions in natural patterns.
    • Communication & Satellites: Increased vulnerability to solar storms.
    • Scientific Research: Insights into Earth’s magnetic field behavior.
