Shifting of Earth’s Magnetic North Pole
- Recent Update: Scientists have tracked the magnetic north pole’s movement, showing it is now closer to Siberia and continues drifting toward Russia.
- Magnetic Poles: Generated by Earth’s molten core, they mark points where the magnetic field points vertically downward.
- Shift of Magnetic North Pole:
- First identified in 1831 near Canada’s Arctic islands.
- Has moved over 400 km towards Russia in the past century.
- Tracked using the World Magnetic Model (WMM), updated every five years.
- Causes:
- Core Fluid Dynamics: Turbulent movement of molten iron and nickel.
- Geomagnetic Anomalies: Instabilities in the magnetic field.
- Magnetic Reversal Cycle: Possible long-term changes.
- Implications:
- Navigation: Frequent updates needed for accuracy.
- Animal Migration: Disruptions in natural patterns.
- Communication & Satellites: Increased vulnerability to solar storms.
- Scientific Research: Insights into Earth’s magnetic field behavior.
