Is Scurvy Making A Comeback in the 21st century?

Scurvy is a disease caused due to severe vitamin C (ascorbic acid) deficiency, crucial for collagen production and tissue health.

Symptoms of Scurvy : Fatigue and weakness, Swollen, bleeding gums or loose teeth, Joint and muscle pain, Dry, rough, or discolored skin (purple spots), Slow healing of cuts and sores, Anemia (low red blood cell count), Increased susceptibility to infections

Historical Context: common in 15th to 18th centuries among sailors.

Recent Re-emergence: Cases reported in Australia and Canada.

Treatment : high-dose vitamin C (1,000 mg daily) led to recovery. Humans cannot synthesize vitamin C.

Factor Contributing to Resurgence: Reliance on processed foods. Cooking destroys some of the vitamin C found in food.

Daily Intake: 45 mg for adults (higher for pregnant/breastfeeding).

Sources: Citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwifruit, capsicum, broccoli.

Importance of Vitamin C: development, growth, and healing of skin, bones, and connective tissue; for blood vessels to function properly; for healthy teeth and gums.
