Kondh tribe in A.P. organize ‘doliyatra’; demand better roads

Doli Yatra Protest: The Kondh tribal community in Andhra Pradesh organized the ‘doli yatra’ to demand better roads to their hilltop villages, like Pedagaruvu, Pithrigedda, and Jajulabandha.

Reason for Protest: About 300 members of the Kondh tribe struggle to access healthcare due to the lack of roads. They often have to carry sick or pregnant individuals in makeshift dolies over long distances.

Community Initiative: In 2020, the villagers pooled their resources to build a road, but it was destroyed by rain, making transportation harder.

Region: Kondhs live in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, and West Bengal.

Religion: Kondh tribe practices animism, worshipping natural elements.

Traditional Lifestyle: Traditionally, the Kondh are agriculturalists and practice shifting cultivation, known locally as podu” farming.

Language: Mainly speak Kui, a Dravidian language, and use Odia script.
