•Environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk led the ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’ to demand to demand Statehood, inclusion of Ladakh under the sixth schedule of the constitution (protection of tribal areas), job reservation for locals and two Lok Sabha and one Rajya Sabha seat for the region.
•The Sixth Schedule under Article 244 of the Constitution protects tribal populations, allowing for the creation of autonomous development councils which can frame laws on land, public health, agriculture.
•Sixth Schedule presently applies to Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram
•Under the provision of the Sixth Schedule, the Governor of the State is
•empowered to determine the area or areas as administrative units of the Autonomous Districts and Autonomous Regions.
•Ladakh was turned into a Union Territory without any Legislative Assembly after the special status of J&K was revoked in 2019.
